Make your own Pond!

Purpose and Significance of "The Pond"

The pond is the hightlight of your garden! No longer is it only a privilege of the rich. It is usually favored by the whole family. Like a piece of some tropical setting in your own back yard. A peaceful place to escape the bustle of the day.

Maybe you like to hear the splashing of a small fountain or the gurgle of moving water which makes the noise of the neighborhood less noticeable. Watching the playful antics of dragonflies takes our thoughts off more stressful subjects and allows us to enjoy the moment.

Socially we'd like a place with room enough to invite our friends over to enjoy it with us. To be able to sit together with wine in hand, exchanging stories and having a few laughs is indeed a good feeling. It's good for the soul!

Ah yes,we can see it now; but where and how to start?

For myself I surveyed my yard, from all angles. It actually took me a year to come up with the plan, design & layout...(all those terms mean the same to me). I sat on the grass in several places where chairs might be placed to see the view from there. I didn't really want to face the fence too closely, or to see in the neighbors kitchen either. I had a couple of trees (and their roots) to consider too. You don't want too many (if any) leaves falling in the pond, or too much shade, both of which can later cause yucky water. The roots can also puncture your liner if they're too aggressive.

I also made a wish list of what all went with the pond like: a stream with bridge, gazebo, patio area, surrounding garden beds, walkways, lights, waterfall & whimsical accessories. They don't all have to be done at the same time or even year, but at least you can plan for them.

I don't really want fish in my pond. The cats, raccoons, and some flying predators seem to make them disappear. Also I had it in mind that if it was hot enough, I'd like to wade in, kids too. (Well, we'll see how that goes.)

The worst part is the clay soil which unfortunately starts a few inches below the top soil. I have a few new calluses now. Some of the clay will act as the base and support of the waterfall, the rest will help level the ground under the patio area. By the way, did you know that term "patio" is generally used incorrectly? An outdoor area surrounded by walls like a courtyard is the correct term for a patio. For my project, the term "terrace" is more appropriate.
