A Haunted Halloween At My Home

days 'til Halloween!

Haunted Halloween HouseBack in 1998, my friend Nancy & I decided to make a haunted halloween house in our driveway for Halloween eve for our little trick or treaters, and to collect donations for a local charity. We hung huge black & orange plastic sheets over a wood frame we built, and made display rooms using more sheets as dividers. It was a little more work than we thought and the weather was not kind.

Our special halloween effects included a "Ghost Buster" car which we filled with illuminated ghosts and attached a water blaster gun to the front hood (photo 1).

At the end of that walk was a room dedicated to old monster masks which we attached on bodies wearing old clothes, (photo 2), and stuffed with whatever we had (shopping bags, straw, Nancy's husband...).

Glow in the dark Then the path turned right and there was a little room filled with hundreds of glow in the dark stickers surrounding a wardrobe sized mirror.

Lightening EffectNext to that, the path led to our honeymoon couple (photo 3 & 4). Behind them was an old velvet curtain and a window frame which camoflaged the light organ that was hooked up to the stereo system. This created a lightening effect that matched the noises of the special halloween sound effects CD.

Halloween GhostThe path curved again in the U shape we setup and there was a huge ghost whose eyes glowed, body quivered from the sound activated motor, and its sheet billowed and flapped from the fan blowing below.

Our final display was our cemetary of tombstones made of styrofoam (photo 5). My dad built a small wooden coffin, in which we placed a dressed up Count Dracula when Nancy's son Dustin couldn't be there in costume himself. Nancy dressed up as a witch and handed out halloween candy from her black cauldron at the exit. Of course our halloween displays included black lights, floodlights, other creepy halloween accessories, and bales of hay to compliment the atmosphere, and ropes to keep the public on path and out of the displays.

All in all it was quite the effect, and we'd really like to do it again someday. View pictures from 2004
