Have you ever seen a ghost? Do ghosts really exist? Are ghosts scary or friendly? All we know about ghosts is what we've heard or read about them and your imagination can help you paint a ghostly picture.
and a candle or piece of wax.
Mostly we think ghosts are white and that you can almost see through them like mist on the water. They float through the air, walls and locked doors. Sometimes they wear and rattle chains, and hide behind trees in the woods, or live in haunted houses and love to frighten people. Halloween is the time of year when many ghosts seem to come out of hiding.
Use the candle or wax to draw your ghost on the white paper. Of course you won't be able to see what you are drawing. Pressing a little harder with the wax and then picking up the paper to tilt it towards the light so the light reflects off the wax is a little trick to help make the ghostly image easier to see.
To bring out the ghost, use the paint brush to spread the colored water, or water color paint, over it. Food coloring drops can be added to water in small containers until you have a good rich color. Then dip the brush in the color of your choice and sweep it lightly back and forth over the wax. The color will only stain the paper around the wax and the ghost will appear! For larger pictures, a sponge maybe easier to spread the color.
Get really creative by drawing more than one ghost image and painting with more than one color. Turn it into a game by asking someone to guess what the picture will be as the image begins to show but before you finish painting it.
Your ghost can be funny like your favourite cartoon character Sponge Bob Squarepants, Patrick, or the pet snail Garry! But mostly, ghosts are scary. Let your own imagination tell you what kind of ghost picture to paint.
