Chemical fertilizers found in garden stores, are a quick and direct way to provide nourishment to plants, and are economical in the long run as you only need to apply small quantities at a time.
What do the numbers mean? The three figures you see on fertilizer packages refer to the three essential nutrients plants need in order are:
- nitrogen
- phosphorus, and
- potash
The numbers represent percentages so 5-10-5 means 5% nitrogen, 10% phosphorus, and 5% potash. Different plants require different mixtures so knowing what your plant(s) like is important before you purchase fertilizers.
Nitrogen is an essential element of chlorophyll to aid in rapid growth.
Phosphorus gives the plant it's strenght for sturdy stems and seed formation. Seed developement takes a lot of strength from a plant.
Roots require potash, especially for vegetables.
Always water thoroughly before, and after, applying a chemical fertalizer to avoid fertalizer burn.
